Truly Sorry #2
$80 -- acrylic paint and pencil on paper
11.5 X 15 inches

Politician Mike Harris made some budget cuts to the water system of Ontario. This led to the deaths of seven people in Walkerton when they drank tainted water. Many months later, Mike Harris is truly sorry for having killed these seven people, and apologized for his mistakes. Coincidentally, a damning report came out at approximately the same time.

Whenever someone says they're sorry for murder, they put their picture on the front page of the newspaper. It's the law. If they're a criminal, the headline is something cynical, like, MURDERER APOLOGIZES FOR SLAYING SEVEN. Politicians don't get it quite as rough. With Mike Harris, the headline in The Ottawa Sun read, TRULY SORRY.

The photograph shows Mike sucking in his lips, his eyes open wide, apparently on the brink of tears. This is a very fashionable look for politicians right now. It makes them seem almost human.

Inspired by this photograph, I have done a series of paintings portraying Mike Harris' odd, guilty, lipless expression in as many colours as I'm allowed by law.
