I started with a picture of August Sander (a German photographer) and ended up here. It's nice to use a photgraph as a point of departure, as opposed to something to replicate. The photo is the map. The painting is the adventure. If that makes sense. It probably doesn't. Oh well. So what? How do I know when a painting is finished? My eyes hurt when I look at it. That's how I know that the individual pieces of the face have coalesced into a whole. It takes my eyes awhile to adjust to the new entirety of the thing. My brain struggles to see the individual pieces -- which are now gone -- hence the pain. And then the pain fades as I forget the pieces and just see the whole. And I'm left with this odd sense of "I made that?", convinced that it wasn't me at all. Anyway, that's how it works for me. It probably doesn't make sense to anyone else, which is fine. This painting is for sale. Why so cheap? I have a full time job, and don't really need your money. E-mail me and this work can be yours. |
