Battery
$500 -- acrylic paint, wire, nails, two mutilated dolls,
tin squares, all mounted on a coffee table top

It's somewhat difficult to explain. I decided I wanted to make a movie where I cut a Ken and a Barbie doll in half and then wrap them in wire.

Then I found a coffee table in the garbage one day. I was on my way to work, so I had to carry the table to the office, and then carry it all the way home.

"What's that?" my boss asked when she saw it.

"It a coffee table I rescued from the garbage."

She rolled her eyed at me.

I removed the table legs, and nailed the dolls to the table top. It made them look like trophies -- like a deer head or a fish. This pleased me.

I wasn't sure what I wanted to put between the two dolls. So when I found myself at Home Depot one day, I bought wire and a roll of thin metal, some metal snips, work gloves, and nails. This, I knew, was for an art project. But my plans were vague.

I ended up cutting out squares and nailing them down, wrapping the nails in wire, and painting the whole thing with many different colours. I scratched off a lot of paint using the end of a screwdriver, so the metal shone through.

It took me a long time to decide that it was finished. "Battery" been sitting in my dining room ever since.

If you want to see a huge, detailed photo of the thing, be my guest. It's a BIG photo, mind you.
